Beth Baker to appear at book signing
Award-winning journalist Beth Baker will be signing copies of her book, With a Little Help from Our Friends: Creating Community as we Grow Older, during an author event at 4 p.m. Sunday at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.
Baker is a Maryland-based freelance writer and editor whose work has appeared in publications like The Washington Post, Washingtonian and Nature Conservancy magazines. She is the features editor at BioScience.
In “With a Little Help From Our Friends,” Baker tells stories of people who design innovative ways to enjoy life as they approach retirement. Stories range from a senior artists’ colony in California to an affordable mobile-home cooperative in Oregon.
German educator to lead classes
The Four Corners Chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association is bringing international artist and educator Christa Coogan to Durango next week for a short residency that will be open to the public.
Coogan, who is on the faculty of the Conservatory for Music and Theater in Munich, Germany, will be leading eight workshops for area educators, Fort Lewis College students and faculty and other students of all ages.
The workshops will integrate music, dance and drama. They will start on Monday at noon and run through Wednesday.

Studio & seeking artists for bazaar
Studio & is seeking artists for its second annual Bizarre Bazaar, which will be held on Dec. 12-14.
The event will resemble a cross between a church holiday bazaar and a Turkish bazaar, with a wide range of art for sale. Each artist will be allotted a small space to display their merchandise. Studio & will provide the tables.
There will be a limit of 25 artists, and reserving space will be on a first come, first served basis. Studio & is asking $50 for space reservations. The deadline for entries is Nov. 1.
