For the fourth year, the members of the Looking Glass Collective will hang their work on the walls of the Smiley Cafe in the Smiley Building and have a show.
And, for the fourth year, a portion of the money made from the purchase of the paintings will go to Local First, 30% to be exact, said member Dinah Swan.
The collective, made up of almost 20 members – right now, all of them women from all different age groups and from Durango and other towns – meets monthly to critique each other’s work.
For the show, 16 of the Collective’s members will offer two paintings.
There will be an opening reception celebrating the show from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 5. The exhibit will run through Jan. 30.
And for the artists of the collective, Swan said the show, while it is supporting a local cause, is also important for another reason.
“If you’re a painter, you can stack your work in drawers or on your own walls or in the garage, and they’re just there and who knows what will happen to them,” she said. “You want them out there, even if you don’t sell them; you want other people to look at them at least. It’s like a writer – if nobody reads it, it’s just … there.”
