David Roberts to read, sign book

Maria’s Bookshop will host author David Roberts for a reading and signing of his new book, Lost World of the Old Ones: Discoveries in the Ancient Southwest, at 6:30 p.m. April 13 at the shop, 960 Main Ave.

Roberts is the author of 26 books including In Search of the Old Ones: Exploring the Anasazi World of the Southwest and Alone on the Ice: The Greatest Survival Story in the History of Exploration.

Sorrel Sky Gallery to host former local

Sorrel Sky Gallery will participate in the First Thursday Art Walk with oil paintings by Stephen Day from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the gallery, 828 Main Ave.

Day is an accomplished painter who graduated from Durango High School in 1972. He now divides his time between his homes in Taos, New Mexico, and Tucson, Arizona. He’ll unveil 15 brand-new paintings for Thursday’s show. The exhibit will include several large Southwestern vistas as well as a collection of smaller paintings from Canyon de Chelly.

Mancos Valley Chorus to perform

The Mancos Valley Chorus will present “We Will Rock You!” on these dates:

3:30 p.m. May 3 and 7 p.m. May 8 at the Mancos Methodist Church, 470 W. Grand in Mancos.

7 p.m. May 5 at First United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park in Cortez.

7 p.m. May 6 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road.

The program will include a variety of classic rock tunes, including “Under the Boardwalk,” “California Dreamin’” and “Dancing Queen.” Drums and bass, with Lee Bartley at the piano, will accompany the chorus. Concerts in Mancos will be followed by a reception at which the audience can meet and talk with chorus members. All concerts are free and open to the public.

Maria’s Bookshop to host poetry readings

Maria’s Bookshop will host Todd Macon’s Mountain Middle School students for poetry readings at 10:30 a.m. April 18 at the bookshop, 960 Main Ave.

Maria’s Bookshop also will host local poet and author Pam Uschuk and 13 of her Fort Lewis College students for an event at 6:30 p.m. April 21. Uschuk will read poems from her new book, Blood Flower, and her students will read their own poetry.

Peter Decker to read, sign book

Maria’s Bookshop will host author Peter Decker for a reading and signing of his new book, Red, White & Army Blue, at 6:30 p.m. April 23 at the bookshop, 960 Main Ave.

Decker is the author of the books The Utes Must Go! and Saving the West.
