‘Aren’t You Dyeing to Know’ will open lecture series

The Center of Southwest Studies will begin its 2015 summer lecture series, “Imagining the West,” with textile dyes expert David Wenger, professor and director of the Lysosomal Diseases Testing Laboratory at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

The lecture, “Aren’t You Dyeing to Know: Testing of Dyes in Early Navajo Weavings,” will take place at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the center’s Lyceum Room 120. Wenger will talk about the importance of testing red-dyed and blue-dyed wool in Southwestern textiles and what dye testing can and cannot tell about a weaving. He will illustrate his method for testing textiles and compare it with others commonly used to analyze dyed fibers.

All summer lectures are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on specific Wednesdays and are free to the public.
