Durango Arts Center events announced

The Durango Arts Center (DAC) announces the following events:

The Saturday Series presents Viewpoints: An Inspiring Approach to Creating Theatre with Leah Brewer from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday.

The adult performing art Saturday Series featuring the workshop “How to Audition: Helpful tips for landing a role” will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 13. Theresa A. Carson will lead the workshop aimed at helping beginning and professional actors improve and enhance their audition techniques. Workshops cost $34 for DAC Members, $40 for non-members.

The free winter art lecture series titled “Art Genres,” delivered by local art historian, journalist and critic, Judith Reynolds will go from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The series will run Thursdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. through March 3. The lectures will investigate genres like still life, landscape, portraiture, history and conceptual art. Reynolds will begin each presentation with a provocative contemporary image and then put it in an art historical context. Each session will last 45 minutes to one hour with a 30 minute discussion period to follow. The series is free.

Sorrel Sky will represent jeweler

Sorrel Sky Gallery announces the representation of award-winning contemporary Navajo jewelry artist Cody Sanderson to its Durango gallery, 828 Main Ave. A collection of sterling silver rings, bracelets and necklaces are now on display.

Chamber singer auditions to be held

The Durango Chamber Singers, a new mixed-voice performing ensemble, will hold auditions from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15, 22 and 24 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road. Auditions will also be scheduled on February 17 at a different location, to be announced.

Audition candidates must have choral experience, read music, and be available for Monday evening rehearsals in Durango beginning March 21. Each private audition will last about 15 minutes. Singers should not prepare a song to bring with them. Rather, all auditionees will be asked to sing the same familiar song, with accompaniment, and to demonstrate vocal range and sight singing ability. Grant for Durango film festival

Durango Film – An Independent Film Festival has received a matching grant of $6,500 from Colorado Creative Industries (CCI), a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

This grant was awarded through CCI’s Colorado Creates Program and will support the 11th annual presentation of the festival and its programs that take place during festival week, March 2 to 6.

State grants are awarded through a competitive process. This grant signifies that Durango Film – An Independent Film Festival provides a high-level of quality in its programs, community service and administrative ability. The festival is slated to screen 106 films at three venues in Durango during the early March film festival.
