Durango Arts Center announces events

The Durango Arts Center announces the following events:

“Viewpoints: An Inspiring Approach to Creating Theatre” with Leah Brewer will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. This workshop will go over the very basics of Viewpoints technique: exploration of space and time; improvisational movement and speaking; and ensemble building. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and can be helpful to actors, choreographers, directors, designers, dramaturgs and writers. The third annual free winter art lecture series, “Art Genres,” will be held by local art historian, journalist and critic Judith Reynolds from 3 to 4:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 11 and running Thursdays through March 3. Art Genres is an arts investigation on topics like still life, landscape, portraiture, history and conceptual art. Tickets are currently on sale for the 2016 Kids’ Follies at the Durango Arts Center. As part of the Durango Snowdown celebration, kids ages 8 to 18 perform this 90-minute show themed, “Back to the ’80s.” The Kids’ Follies show will take place at 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Display painted art during Snowdown

Participants are invited to create a piece of art related to Durango or Snowdown and show it at a Pop Up Art Show at the Extension Hall at the LaPlata County Fairgrounds. Sign up between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. Paint something between Wednesday and Saturday morning and bring it to the fairgrounds to display from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The entry fee is $5. Children’s art will be included. For more information, call 247-1916.

Weiner will headline 2016 Literary Festival

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner will headline the 2016 Durango Public Library Literary Festival on April 28.

The event will start with a free reception at 5:30 p.m., with Weiner speaking at 7 p.m. Book sales and signing, sponsored by Maria’s Bookshop, will follow after her talk.
