One Paycheck Away to be exhibited
Housing Solutions for the Southwest will present an exhibit of photographs in a show, “One Paycheck Away,” in the Red Room of the Open Shutter Gallery at 735 Main Ave. The show begins Friday and continues through March 30. An opening reception will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
This show features portraits of families facing life’s challenges with hope and determination by photographer Robert Collins. Collins is an internationally-acclaimed photographer who has worked on such projects as Woodstock to images for the World Health Organization. He donated his time and services to bring awareness to the mission of Housing Solutions, which is to “lead the way in providing help, hope and a seamless system of housing services to our communities in Southwest Colorado.”
Choir concert to be performed
The Durango Choral Society, the Durango Women’s Choir and the Renaissance Singers from Telluride present a concert, “Lux Aeterna,” at 7 p.m. March 11 and 2 p.m. March 12 at First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive. Acting workshops offered at DAC
“ACTING: Inside Out/Outside In – The Feedback Loop” workshops with Mona Wood-Patterson will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday and March 12, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 19 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
This class allows participants to explore the body/emotion connection with a dynamic approach that will enable you to free up both body and emotion. Expect lots of fun exercises and some new approaches to finding a character. Mona Wood-Patterson is the co-artistic director of Merely Players and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Colorado Theatre Teacher of the Year, Fort Lewis College Distinguished Alumnus and Colorado State Thespian Hall of Fame inductee.

Last Art Genres lecture to be held
The final edition of “Art Genres,”a free five-part art lecture series by arts journalist and historian Judith Reynolds, will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Arts Center Theatre, 802 East Second Ave. The upcoming lecture topic is “Idea and Image: The Trouble with Conceptual Art.”
Ragtime Festival tickets go on sale
The fourth annual Durango Ragtime & Early Jazz Festival will take place from March 18 to 20 at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
For three days, the Strater will be filled with the sounds of ragtime and early jazz music entertainment by some of the best ragtime and early jazz musicians in the world. Strater Hotel General Manager Michelle Thom said the festival is becoming well known around the nation. Festival activities include live music, symposiums, silent movies, after-hour parties in the Diamond Belle Saloon and more. Entertainers at this festival will be Adam Swanson (festival music director), Tom Brier, Danny Coots, Andrew Greene, Frederick Hodges, Brian Holland, Frank LiVolsi, Will Perkins, Bob Seeley, Carl Sonny Leyland and Virginia Tichenor.
