Fleury to host a flurry of visual workshops
In residence through May 10 at Mesa Verde National Park, visual artist and photographer Jerry Fleury will offer free photography workshops Thursday.
“Moving from Automatic to Manual” will be offered at 10 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. Participants should meet Fleury at the flagpole in front of the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum.
“Moving from Capturing to Creating” will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Far View Lodge Library downstairs in the Lodge Registration building.
No advance registration is necessary.
Recently retired from senior management at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, Fleury has pursued the art of photography for the last 10 years through workshops, seminars and self-directed study in areas such as art theory, photo essay and photojournalism and photo techniques. Fleury is a member of the Torrance Artist Guild, the Redondo Beach Art Group and the South Bay Camera Club.
Mesa Verde National Park’s Artist in Residence program offers professional writers, composers and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their particular art forms while staying in the park.

L.A. photographer shows Korea divided
The Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave., will present an exhibit of color photographs of a recent trip to North Korea by Los Angeles photographer Mark Edward Harris in a show called “Korea: A Nation Divided” from May 8 to June 24.
After graduating from California State University Los Angeles,with a master of arts degree in pictorial/documentary history, Harris started his professional photography career doing stills for the Merv Griffin Show and various television and movie companies.
An opening reception with Harris will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. May 8 during the annual Spring Gallery Walk.

Open Shutter to show ‘Life on Wheels’
The Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave., will present an exhibit of color photographs in the Red Room Gallery by David Gardner in a show called “Life on Wheels: The New American Nomads” from May 8 to June 24.
Gardner lives part-time in San Francisco and part-time in a motorhome, pursuing his photographic interests across the continent. His exhibit looks at Americans who have willfully traded traditional lifestyles of home and property for a nomadic existence of full-time life on the road in recreational vehicles.
An opening reception with Garner will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. May 8 during the annual Spring Gallery Walk.

Golf and wine event to benefit film festival
Durango Film: An Independent Film Festival will begin its fundraising season by partnering with Glacier Club for Celebrity Wine & 9 on May 16.
A golfing event will be followed by a tasting of wines from celebrity vineyards and appetizers prepared by the Glacier Club chefs. Each of the nine holes has a theme featuring a golf movie or celebrity vineyard.
Golf registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. May 16, with practice facility games until 2:45 p.m. and a shotgun start at 3 p.m. The wine event will start at the Glacier Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m.

Grammy composer our artist in residence
Three-time Grammy-nominated composer/performer/multi-instrumentalist David Arkenstone will serve as Artist in Residence at Mesa Verde National Park from May 11 to May 24.
This program invites five artists from various disciplines to participate in two-week residencies in the spring and fall each year. Arkenstone is the only composer/musician selected for 2015. As part of his residency, Arkenstone will offer a free public concert at 7 p.m. May 21 at the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum Auditorium. No advance registration is required.

Children’s author Lucero to visit library
The Fort Lewis Mesa Branch of the Durango Public Library, 11274 Colorado Highway 140, will host children’s author and Durango native Iris Lucero at 3 p.m. May 11.
Lucero will present a children’s storytime that will include her books. She is the author and illustrator of four books for children – No Kissing ’Til College, a middle-grade chapter book; The Day My Brother Blew Away, a picture book; Stan and the Bubblegum Beast, another picture book; and Potty Talk Poetry, a collection of original humorous poems.

Maria’s Bookshop to host local authors
In conjunction with Independent Bookstore Day, a country-wide celebration of books and independent bookstores, Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave., will host 13 local authors throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 2.
The authors will roam the floor as guest booksellers, interacting with customers and recommending their favorite books and authors, as well as answer questions regarding their own work and experiences. Staff picks will be featured through the store, and each bookseller will have a mystery pick of their own, wrapped in plain paper and available for purchase at a 10 percent discount.
