Durango Arts Center to show films

The La Plata Open Space Conservatory will host an event Thursday that combines short films, wild places and a good cause.

Shorties Film Night will take place at 6 p.m. at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. Tickets are $8 at the door. Proceeds will benefit La Plata Open Space Conservancy.

Along with a program of shorts, the event will feature local landowners and individuals who have protected thousands of acres of local open space, and information from the Open Space Conservancy’s executive director, Amy Schwarzbach.

Free wilderness talk on tap Wednesday

Fort Lewis College professor Andrew Gulliford will present a free lecture called “Solo in the Southwest: Going Out & Coming Back and the Wilderness Within” at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Pullman Room of the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

The event is part of the Durango Wilderness 50 Lecture series and is being presented by Great Old Broads for Wilderness. Gulliford will discuss the importance of getting outdoors and solo experiences, and will share stories and issues from his new book Outdoors in the Southwest: An Adventure Anthology.

Noel Night seeking local entertainers

Noel Night organizers are seeking volunteer entertainers for this year’s event, which is scheduled for Dec. 5.

Performances will take place at various locations along Main Avenue and will come with a listing in the Durango Herald’s Noel Night insert.

Lecture series to host ‘Walking’ art panel

The Life-long Learning Lecture Series is partnering with Durango’s Common Reading Experience to host a panel Thursday called “Walking into the Arts: Various Artistic Expressions Inspired by Dead Man Walking.”

The free panel will take place at 7 p.m. in Noble Hall Room 130, 1000 Rim Drive. It’s open to the public.

The panel, which will explore artworks inspired by Sister Helen Prejean’s book Dead Man Walking, will feature Fort Lewis College faculty member Charissa Chiaravalloti, retired prison warden and author Tekla Miller and journalist Judith Reynolds.
