Oscar party to benefit Friends of the Arts
An Oscar party will take place Sunday at 6512’ Restaurant and Lounge, 152 E. College Drive.
The red carpet will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $25 and includes a champagne cocktail, food and a cash bar. The event is a benefit for the Durango Friends of the Arts.

Southwest Studies to host book talk
Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a book talk featuring Ghost Tracks, Haunting Tales along the Rails at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the center’s Lyceum.
Former journalists Elizabeth A. Green and Suzy Garrison Meyer collected the stories, explored the length of the railroad route with railroad employees and paranormal investigators. They researched historic events along the Animas River corridor between Durango and Silverton.
In addition to sharing some stories, Green and Meyer will discuss the pervasive belief in ghosts from ancient to modern times and the enduring popularity of ghost stories, including the perspectives of both skeptics and believers. At the conclusion of their talk, they will answer questions and sign books.

Arts center to host annual juried show
The Durango Arts Center announces the 39th annual Juried Exhibition on display Friday through March 21 in the Barbara Conrad Gallery, 802 East Second Ave.
There will be a gallery opening and artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The winners of Best of Show ($500), Second Place Award ($200) and Third Place Award ($100) will be announced at the reception.
Every year the center hosts the exhibit alongside the Salon des Refuses installed at Steamworks Brewing Inc. for works that will not be exhibited in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. Exhibit juror will be Elizabeth Stannard of Farmington.

Sorrel Sky to host artist workshop
Sorrel Sky Gallery, 828 Main Ave., will host a workshop with artist Stephen Day on “The Basics of Landscape Painting” from Feb. 27 through March 1.
Participants will learn the basics of painting the Western and Southwestern landscapes with Day doing daily demonstrations.
Day is a full-time artist in New Mexico and primarily paints in oil.

Musical event to feature local schools
Music in the Mountains will host a school music extravaganza at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.
The event will feature Bayfield Elementary School, Bayfield Middle School, Miller Middle School, Escalante Middle School, Durango High School and the Fort Lewis College Drumline. Three hundred students of all ages will perform together for a grand finale.
