Durango Drums hosts open drum circle

Durango Drums will celebrate its five-year anniversary with an open drum circle from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Groove U Dance Studio, 26369 U.S. Highway 160.

The event will feature music by Durango drummers Cheryl and Nuria, a student performance and beats by DJ Codestar. Kids are welcome.

Arts Center announces upcoming events

The Durango Arts Center announces the following:

The opening receptions for two new exhibitions will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. The exhibit, “Obedience, Conformity, Apathy ... ‘It’s all good!’” joins two generations of artists to feature the work of father and son, artists Bud Madeen and Jeff Madeen. The show will be on display through March 26. The exhibit “Ink & Wax: Intimate Surface Directions” features a series of small- to medium-sized monotype/encaustic works on paper by artist Karen Riley. The show will be on display in The Art Library through April 26.

Modern comedy, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” by Christopher Durang will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. This is the show’s final week. The monthly First Thursdays Art Walk celebrating the art and artists of galleries and alternative art venues of Durango will take place Thursday. Included are: work by Aaron Berg in The Recess Gallery, 1027 Main Ave. (located in the back of Studio &); MaryAnne LeBlanc’s creative quilting work at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.; Native Cinema Reception as part of the 11th Annual Durango Film Festival at Toh-Atin Gallery, 145 West Ninth St.; an opening reception for Cynthia DeBolt at Sorrel Sky, 828 Main Ave.; and the two newest exhibits will be open late at the Durango Arts Center. Emerging, mid-career and established artists are invited to apply for a 2016 residency at Willowtail Springs Nature Preserve and Education Center in collaboration with DAC. Artists must be currently living and creating work in one of these five counties: La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores or San Juan. DAC will sponsor five residencies in 2016. Durango Film Festival needs volunteers

The 2016 Durango Film: An Independent Film Festival needs volunteers to help in the theatres and other areas. Festival dates are March 2 to 6 and training will be provided. Volunteers receive a movie punch pass and other benefits.

Film office to hold Oscar viewing party

The Four Corners Film Office will host an Oscars viewing party at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Bookcase & Barber, 601 East Second Ave. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 per couple.

Each ticket receives a complimentary drink, Oscar bingo card and ballots. RSVP is required. Call 749-1857.

Colorado author to hold writing workshops

Author and CSU Professor Todd Mitchell will present poetry and fiction writing workshops to students on Monday at Ignacio Middle School, 222 County Road 320.

He is the author of The Traitor King, Backwards and The Secret to Lying. Mitchell teaches creative writing and literature at Colorado State University.
