Durango Arts Center hosts events

The Durango Arts Center (DAC) announces the following events:

Move Your Body with Performing Arts Education Series: Durango Arts Center’s Saturday Series adult performing arts workshop, “Musical Theater Dance” with Suzy DiSanto from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 20 in the DAC Theater, 802 East Second Ave. Students will gain experience in learning short sequences quickly to help in other dance classes and auditions. DiSanto has taught for 15 years in the Four Corners area and has choreographed for Third Ave. Dance Company, FLC Theatre, the Diamond Circle Melodrama, Snowdown Follies, Sandstone Productions and the DAC. For more information and to register, visit DurangoArts.org/performing-adults.

The opening reception for, “Obedience, Conformity, Apathy ... It’s All Good?” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 26. The exhibit will be on display until March 26. For this exhibit, local artist Jeff Madeen will share the spotlight with his father, Bud, and his series of nine canvases titled, “The Freedom Series,” as a culmination of 25 years of work. Madeen will then provide his personal rebuttals to those pieces with his new work in the media of photography, wood block prints, multimedia sculptures, paint on canvas, installation and video. Jeff Madeen studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He has lived and created art in Durango since 1995.

Karen Riley’s “Ink & Wax: Intimate Surface Directions” opens from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the Art Library. The exhibit will be on display until April 26. A series of small- to medium-sized monotype/encaustic works on paper showcases the artist’s recent explorations of these two distinct forms of printmaking. This fusion of processes produces nuanced and delicate works that draw the viewer in for closer inspection.

Auditions for DAC’s summer theater show, “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 27 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 29. Applicants ages 16 and up should prepare a 1-minute song and optional monologue. Accompaniment provided if needed. Applicants should be prepared to dance. Rehearsals start the week of May 23; performances run July 1 to 3, 14 to 16, 21 to 23 and 29 to 31. For more information, call 970-259-2606.

The next DAC adult visual art workshop, “Book Making: Exploring Memories, History & Sense of Place,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 and 21. Participants will explore their own personal history, using memory, writing and images to construct collaged book pages that reflect a sense of place. Color, mark making and texture will be combined with images to create a visual memoir in a beautifully-crafted handmade book structure. The two-day workshop is $195 for DAC members and $225 for non-members and includes materials. For more information, call 259-2606, ext. 15, or email sandra@durangoarts.org.
