Open Shutter to show DHS photography

The Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave., will present a special Red Room exhibit of photography by Durango High School students.

The show will begin Friday and will continue through April 29. The main gallery is featuring the work of Los Angeles photographer Kamil Vojnar.

The DHS Photography Department will share the work of 13 student photographers. DHS’s Visual Arts Department offers courses in digital photography and advanced digital photography. Students in these courses learn to use the camera; to edit their photos in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom; to make fine art digital prints; to mat and finish their work; and to critique. In these courses, students are challenged to work like real artists and photographers to develop their own interests and styles in photography.

The artist’s reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Paint animals with Aldrich at Sorrel Sky

Sorrel Sky Gallery will host a workshop with artist Edward Aldrich on painting animals April 24-26 in Durango.

Aldrich is known for his images of wildlife in its natural environs. In this workshop, he will help students depict fur, feathers and musculature. Aldrich was juried into the Society of Animal Artists after graduating from art school.

His work also is in the permanent collection at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and regularly is featured in its “Birds in Art.” His paintings have been included in many national shows, as well as 12 one-man shows in various galleries, including Sorrel Sky.

Sorrel Sky Gallery’s third annual Artists Workshop Series is scheduled on weekends to make it more convenient for artists to enjoy the experience of learning with a master while getting to know the arts communities in Durango and Santa Fe.

For more information and to register, call 247-3555. A listing of workshops is available at www.sorrelsky.com.
