Papermaking class to be offered

The Durango Arts Center will offer “Paper Possibilities” hand papermaking with visiting artist Helen Hiebert April 18 and 19 at the center, 802 East Second Ave.

Participants will create objects that expand and collapse, open and close, fold and unfold that can turn into books, tubes, tunnels, lanterns and more. The cost of the workshop is $195 for center members and $225 for general registration.

Hiebert is a Colorado artist who constructs installations, sculptures, films, artists’ books and works in paper using handmade paper as her primary medium. She teaches professionally, lectures and exhibits her work internationally, and is the author of five books on papermaking and book arts.

Tucson artist exhibits paper arts

Tucson, Arizona artist Catherine Nash will exhibit “Turning the Page: A retrospective of Artist Books” Friday through April 5 with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.

There also will be a reception on March 27 in conjunction with the Barbara Conrad Gallery. Nash, specializes in Japanese and Western hand papermaking, encaustic painting and mixed media. Inspired by nature, and created of handmade paper and natural elements, Nash’s artist books span two decades of creative work.
