Library Lit Fest issues last call for authors

The Durango Public Library encourages local authors to apply for inclusion in this fall’s Local Authors Fair, which will be held Oct. 15.

Applications are due by July 1. The event, which will be part of the fifth annual Durango Public Library Literary Festival, will offer a chance for local authors to interact with the community, network with fellow writers and promote their work.

CSWS lecture series will start June 18

Center for Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a six-part lecture series touching on regional history, anthropology, art and religion this summer. Topics and presenters will be:

June 18: Jews, Christians and Moors in the Southwest Borderlands, presented by Jay Harrison.

July 2: Taos Society of Artists by Barbara Klema.

July 9: Mabel Dodge Luhan by Judith Reynolds.

July 23: 1960s musical changes by Bob Griffith.

Aug. 6: Emeritus Professor Duane Smith will discuss the center’s 50 years.

Aug. 20: Tassel-eared squirrels of the Southwest by Syle Allred.

All lectures will take place at 1:30 p.m., and all will be in the Lyceum with the exception of the Aug. 20 event, which will be in the CSWS Museum.

DAC announces artists for residency program

The Durango Arts Center has announced the artists for its 2014 Artist in Residency program, which is a collaboration with Willowtail Springs Preserve/Education Center near Mancos.

Residency artists are Jane Pedersen and Elizabeth Kinahan, both of Durango. Pedersen will be working on and displaying her books in conjunction with the DAC’s upcoming “Love, Dad” theater production and will teach a handmade journal workshop on Monday. Kinahan will offer a community-based project in July.

DAC’s one-week residency is intended to support DAC’s Annual Juried Exhibit, which will be on display July 11-Aug. 9 in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. Artists spend a week painting, writing, illustrating or creating performance art pieces at Willowtail Springs.

Jewelry-design workshop to be held at DAC

The Durango Arts Center will host a jewelry-design workshop Saturday and Sunday with visiting instructor Deb Karash.

The workshop, titled “Stack It, Smash It, Squish It, Screw It,” will teach students how to build a pendant using simple techniques to achieve a complex result.

The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at DAC, 802 East Second Ave. and costs $375 for nonmembers or $350 for members.

Miniatures Club to meet in Mancos

The Four Corners Miniatures Club will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday for a flower workshop in the Mancos Public Library, 211 1st St., Mancos.

Attendees will be creating flowers in 1-inch scale, learning techniques for building miniature pots or designing an entire tiny garden. The club will provide supplies and tools; participants should bring a brown-bag lunch.

The Four Corners Miniatrues Club is for dollhouse and miniaturists of all skill levels.
