Beginning drawing class to be held at arts center

Ed Bolster will teach a beginning drawing class from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays from April 15 to May 13 at Durango Arts Center.

This course, designed for the novice, will introduce fundamental techniques in drawing as well as essential elements of design. Students will use graphite pencil, charcoal and brush to learn the art of seeing as well as the art of drawing.

Cost for DAC members is $100 and for non-members $125. All materials will be provided.

Figure drawing class to be held at arts center

Ed Bolster will teach a figure drawing class from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays from April 17 to May 15.

This course is designed for those who have some drawing experience. Working from live models, students will learn advanced drawing techniques and develop their natural way of drawing.

Materials will be provided for the first class and will discuss the materials list.

Cost for DAC members is $100 and for non-members $125. A $35 model fee will be paid to the instructor.

Jewelry design exhibition seeks entries

The TOP Jewels National Jewlery Design Exhibition seeks entries from jewelry artists.

Works must be original, recently fabricated and not have been shown previously at the Durango Arts Center. All works must be for sale. Submitted pieces must be wearable jewelry and include neckware, pins, bracelets, earrings, rings and buckles.

The exhibition will be on display at the arts center May 16 through June 28.

The nonrefundable entry fee is $30 for a minimum of three images and an additional $10 each (maximum of five images/entries. Submit work through WESTAF online CaFe application process at www.callforentry.org. Search TOP Jewels National Jewelry Design Exhibition or Durango Arts Center.

Continuing ed offers writer’s workshop

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education will offer a writer’s workshop called “Make Good Writing Great!” from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays from April 29 through May 27.

Students will learn to analyze effective writing, to recognize the qualities that separate great writing from adequate writing, and to develop the skills to take their own writing to a higher level. Specific strategies will be introduced, discussed and applied to enjoyable assignments in each class.

Instructor Lynn Kuntz’s credits include five books for children, a feature family film, and magazine and newspaper articles for a variety of publications. Kuntz has received a number of awards, including a Dallas Press Club Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Journalism” and a Colorado Authors League award for “Best Children’s Book of the Year.”

Poetry submissions sought for conference

Poets from the Four Corners are invited to submit poens for the Southwest’s Old Growth Forests conference, to be held Aug. 4-6 at Fort Lewis College.

Submit work for “An Evening of Music & Poetry” to be held Aug. 5 at the Community Concert Hall at FLC.

Mark Fischer poetry prize seeks entries

Telluride Arts invites submissions to the 16th annual Mark Fischer Poetry Prize.

Prizes will be awarded to the entry that best exhibits the qualities of originality, novelty, complex meaning, linguistic skill and wit. The wilder the better. All styles and content matter are acceptable.

The prize is open to poets residing in Arizona, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. The judging is blind, meaning the judge has no personal information attached to the poems. The judge will make decisions based on the overall quality of the work and the above values.

Awards will $200 first prize, $150 second prize, and $100 third prize, and $50 honorable mention will be presented at a celebratory reading in Telluride. Winners will be published in local newspapers and are asked to read at the poetry awards ceremony May 17 in Telluride.

Submnit each poen on 8½ x 11 pages in 12-point font. Do not include name on poem pages. Include $5 per poem, entered.
