10-Minute Play Celebration to take arts center stage

The Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will present an evening of staged readings as part of the fourth annual 10-Minute Play Celebration at 7 p.m. Friday at the center’s theater.

The top five selected 10-minute plays – “The Roommate,” “Imagine That,” “Faulty Merchandise,” “Misery Therapy” and “Bitten” – will be read. Judges will pick the $500 grand-prize winner, and the audience will vote to choose the winner of the $100 People’s Choice Award.

The winners and finalists will be staged in full production in the 10-Minute Play Celebration’s culminating event, the 10-Minute Play Festival, on Oct. 9-11.

Authors invited to apply to present work at festival

Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., is inviting authors to present their works to an audience during the sixth annual Literary Festival on Sept. 26.

The application deadline has been extended to June 6. Selected authors will audition with a panel from the library and Maria’s Bookshop for the opportunity to sell their books during the festival.

Toh-Atin cycling team raises $15,000 to fight cancer

Toh-Atin Gallery’s fundraising bicycle team, The Chiefs, rode in the Iron Horse Classic during Memorial Day weekend and raised $15,000 for Livestrong, an organization devoted to helping people and families affected by cancer.

More than 15 million people in the United States have benefited from Livestrong’s services.

The team members are Richard Shaner, Frank Lockwood, Kris McCann, Jackson Clark, Suzanne Harrison, Antonia Clark and Jim Dulin. This is the fourth time the team has ridden to support Livestrong during the Iron Horse Citizens Tour.

Fantasy author to speak at Maria’s Bookshop

Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave., will host author Todd Fahnestock for a reading and signing of his new fantasy book Fairmist at 6:30 p.m. June 5.

Door prizes include a copy of the lost Blevins chapters. Fahnestock grew up in Durango.

Dumpster beautification winners announced

The Dumpster Beautification Project announces the winners of its design contest: Meredith Page, Lily Oswald, Aidin Edmundson, Lennon Waters and the FLM team of Asher Rehman, Kirk Coy II and Tavin Burger.

Sorrel Sky Gallery to spotlight sculpture

During First Thursday Art Walk on July 2, Sorrel Sky Gallery, 828 Main Ave., will feature the sculpture of New Mexico artist Star Liana York, who will be present to meet the public.

York, who has shown at Sorrel Sky for many years, has been named by Southwest Art magazine as one of the 30 most influential artists of today. For the July event, Star’s bronze sculptures will be presented in an indoor setting surrounded by foliage and greenery to highlight how the sculptures might look presented outdoors.
