Boyer to preview book at Open Shutter gallery

Paul Boyer will present an illustrated discussion of his photographic work for the book, 100 over 100: Moments with One Hundred North American Centenarians, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Open Shutter Gallery. Boyer worked with writer Jim Heynen to produce the book featuring the lives of 100 people older than 100. The gallery is located at 735 Main Ave. There is no charge for admission.

Abshagen to give plein air demonstration

Durango artist Sharon Abshagen will conduct a two-hour demonstration from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at Sorrel Sky Gallery, 828 Main Ave. The local artist will demonstrate how to transfer a small plein air painting to a larger-scale piece. Abshagen is a member of the The Plein Air Painters of the Four Corners and Oil Painters of America.

Kids can explore music at ‘Try It!’ Week

The Durango Children’s Chorale will offer “Try It!” Week for children entering third through eighth grades.

Children will receive group singing lessons, learn music and improve listening skills in a fun and positive learning environment. Students also will participate in an Orff workshop – singing and playing instruments in a group setting.

“Try It” Week will run Aug. 12 through 16 in Roshong Recital Hall inside Jones Hall at Fort Lewis College campus. Hours are 4-5:15 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 4-6:30 p.m. Friday (dinner provided), followed by a concert at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $30 for new singers; $15 is applied to tuition for those who join the Children’s Chorale.

Concert will benefit Durango Nature Studies

The 2013 Bluegrass, BBQ, and Beer: A Summer Celebration will take place from 5-8:30 p.m. Thursday in Rotary Park. The cost is $5 in advance (at Maria’s Bookshop or Bandwagon Music), $7 at the gate. The event will benefit Durango Nature Studies and feature music by Chicken Strange, Flume Canyon Boys and Waiting on Trial.

Bang your head to fight multiple sclerosis

Metal Heads Against MS will host a concert and poker run Saturday in Durango to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis.

The poker run will begin at noon Saturday at Cole’s Chop Shop, 2497 Main Ave., and finish at the VFW, 1550 Main Ave. The cost is $4. The concert will begin at 6 p.m. at the VFW and will feature metal bands Signal 99, Morbid Justice, Obsolete, Skull Theory and Under Exile. Concert tickets are $3.

All proceeds from the event will go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for research. Hank Haven, the former bass player for Farmington-based Signal 99, was diagnosed with MS a little more than a year ago.

Arts Center to host kids’ musicals

The Durango Arts Center and Durango Performing Arts Company will stage the musicals “Annie” and “High School Musical 2 jr.” at 1 p.m. today and Saturday on the DAC stage. Attendees will be able to catch these two musicals back to back or come and go between shows.
