Arts Briefs for Aug. 9

Learn Adobe software at photo club meeting

The Durango Photography Club will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Banquet Room at the Holiday Inn & Suites, 21636 Highway 160 west.

Instead of the usual format of half instruction and half show and tell, the meeting will consist of demonstrations and tutorials on the three software packages most requested by members:

Adobe PhotoShop CS6 by Jerry Baumann.

Adobe LightRoom by Carol Lewin and Kim Furry.

Adobe Elements by MaryAnne Nelson and Linda Brothers.

Each demo/tutor leader will have his or her own laptop and table with chairs for participating members.

Club members are encouraged to bring one or two images on a thumb drive so others can inquire about ways to apply changes to the images and what changes might have greatest impact.

For membership and more information, visit www.DurangoPhotographyClub.org.

Durango artist to offer papermaking workshops

Durango artist Mary Ellen Long will offer two workshops during Durango Arts Center’s upcoming exhibit “Washi and Other Ephemera: The Art of Hand Papermaking.”

The first will be a Sidewalk Cloud Workshop on Aug. 31 ($75/$65 for DAC members plus a $10 materials fee). Students will make hanging clouds of kozo fiber using stencils made from photos of clouds and will learn about processing including cooking and handbeating. The focus will be on techniques of pouring pulp, embossing and pulp displacement.

On Sept. 7, Long will teach Hand Papermaking with Plants (same cost plus $15 for materials). Stems, leaves and petals will be harvested and processed during the week before the workshop, and techniques for inclusions, laminating and embossing will be covered.

To register for either workshop, call Sandra Butler at 259-2606 or visit www.durangoarts.org.
