Arts Center invites artists for juried exhibit
Durango Arts Center invites artists to enter up to three pieces of artwork in any medium for the 4 Corners Commission: Journey Stories juried exhibit, showing Jan. 10 through Feb. 1.
The exhibit theme focuses on incorporating stories of migration, transplantation, moving and “choosing a new life.”
This exhibit is in collaboration with the Animas Museum’s Journey Stories exhibit. Journey Stories is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and Colorado Humanities on display at the Animas Museum from Jan. 17 through Feb. 18.
Juried entry fees vary with number of pieces and member status. Juried awards are $500 for Best of Show, a $200 Second Place Award, a $100 Third Place Award and a Durango Chamber of Commerce “Reflections of Durango” prize of $250.

Barbershoppers to give holiday concert
The Durango Barbershoppers, men and women, will join the Durango Children’s Chorale to present a free concert of Christmas music at 7:01 p.m. Tuesday in the Main Mall at 835 Main Ave.
There will be choruses of men, women and kids, men’s quartets and an audience sing-along.
The program will include a variety of music from the sweetest Christmas lullabies to comically ironic warnings to those who have not been on their best behavior this year, and from the sounds of angel choirs to the revving of Santa’s hot-rod sleigh called “The Old Saint Nick.”

Actor sought for upcoming play
Durango Arts Center Theatre and Merely Players seek an Asian-American actor in his 30s or 40s for a role in the comedic drama “Maple and Vine.”
Rehearsals will begin in February, and the play opens March 14.

Lost Dog seeks artists for two shows
Local artists are invited to submit works for “Safari Style,” the Snowdown art show at Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave. The show will be up during Snowdown and will remain on the walls for the month of February. All mediums ready for installation will be accepted.
The Lost Dog also will host an architectural show in May. This includes all media that is ready for installation.

Ring in the New Year with tamales, dance
The Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County will host a New Year’s Eve tamale-making class and easy salsa dance lesson from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 31. Leave with the tamales you make.
The cost is $15 per person or two for $25. The club is at 2750 Main Ave.

Arts Center to host Kids’ Follies auditions
Auditions for the for Snowdown 2014 Safari So Good! Kid’s Follies will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the dance studio of the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
DAC Theatre’s Applause! will hold auditions for anyone ages 8 to 18 to be in the show. All acts must be age- and audience-appropriate for a quality family show.
Acts of all kinds, including classical, comedy, theatrical, vocal, instrumental, dance, performance art, monologues, solos and ensembles, will be considered. Acts must be no more than 5 minutes in length. There will be a $25 participation fee if selected.

Young singers sought for high school musical
Durango High School Thespian Troupe 1096 will hold auditions for child singers for “The Sound of Music.” Auditions will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Jan. 7 and 8 in the DHS auditorium.
Students will be singing a portion of “Do-Re-Mi” and “So Long, Farewell.” Students should listen to the songs ahead of time, and the songs will be reviewed at the auditions.
Students will be notified that night if they are called back (callbacks will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 9), and readings will be provided for callbacks. The cast list will be posted Jan. 10.
