Native American market to be held Saturday

The Durango High School Native American Club, with help from Fort Lewis College’s Wanbli Ota Club, will host a Native American Winter Market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Durango High School.

This event will feature Native American artists of various mediums, as well as musicians and speakers. Food will be sold, as well. The market is a fundraiser for the DHS Native American Club.

‘Mountain Lion!’ moves to Dolores

The public is invited to a reception for the opening of the “Mountain Lion!” exhibit from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Anasazi Heritage Center, 27501 Highway 184 in Dolores. Patt Dorsey, local manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, will attend the reception and offer a perspective on human-lion interaction.

“Mountain Lion!” was produced by the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College with help from Parks and Wildlife and the Southern Ute Tribe. The exhibit is open through October 2014 and features a variety of perspectives on the West’s most elusive predator.

Noel Night event will benefit veterans

Spa Evo will host a Noel Night benefit for Durango’s homeless veterans from 5 to 8 p.m. today at 1075 Main Ave., upstairs in the Durango Office Suites Building. The event will include a Bad Christmas Sweater Photo Booth, holiday treats and libations.

All donations and 10 percent of all sales will go to the La Plata County chapter of Disabled Veterans of America to provide housing for veterans in need.

Youth orchestras to play holiday concert

The San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestras, under the artistic direction of Nathan Lambert, will kick off the 2013-14 season at 7 p.m. Monday at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College in Durango.

The Youth Preparatory Strings (elementary school) under the direction of Bill LaShell, will perform Fred Hubbell’s “March of the Metro Gnome,” Richard Meyer’s “Sahara Crossing” and Frank J. Halferty’s “Boogie in the Straw.”

The Youth Philharmonic (grades 6-8) under the direction of Lech Usinowicz, will present “Trepak” from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Bob Phillips’ “Danny Rocks (A Celtic Explosion).”

The Youth Orchestra (high school and college) under the direction of Lambert will present Karl Jenkins’ “Allegretto” from “Palladio,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Greensleeves” with flute soloists Cassie Robel and Delana Pleasants and harp soloist Debi Marti, Edward Elgar’s “Nimrod” from “Enigma Variations” and “Mars” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst.

Museum to hold two-day bazaar

Animas Museum will hold its annual Old Fashioned Christmas Bazaar from 5 to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Vendors will fill the museum with handcrafted quilts, pottery, jewelry, hand-milled soaps, stitched items, fine art, knitted items, baked goods and more.

The La Plata County Historical Society has published a “cookie book” featuring historic recipes, stories and images from the Animas Museum Photo Archives. Visitors may sample cookies from the book by lamplight tonight in the 1870s Joy Cabin.

The museum is at 3065 West Second Ave.

Ballet troupe to present master classes

The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College and the State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara will offer master classes in conjunction with the production of “The Nutcracker”:

Jazz Dance, for all level dancers age 10 and older, will be held at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Intermediate Ballet, for intermediate to advanced dancers age 10 and older, will be held at noon Dec. 15. (This class may be used as an audition for the 2013 SSB Summer Program.)

The cost is $10 for one class or $15 for both classes, payable to the Community Concert Hall. Classes will be held onstage at the concert Hall.

Student writers to present works

Fort Lewis College’s Composition 2 classes will hold a Celebration of Student Writing from 3:20 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the FLC Student Union.

The event will include displays, presentations and activities created by students in Comp 250 (Inquiry and Writing), Comp 252 (Professional and Technical Writing), and Comp 253 (Action Research) that represent the research and writing they have accomplished this semester.
