‘Wizard of Oz’ auditions to be held next week
Merely Players will hold auditions for the spring musical, “The Wizard of Oz,” on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Auditions are open to adults and students in grades 4 to 12 who will participate in a theater production class.
The company also will be selecting those who want to learn technical/backstage elements at that time.
Adults will audition from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, and students will audition from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
Rehearsals will begin March 10 and show dates are in early May.

Library to host film screening, discussion
Durango Public Library will host a free encore screening and discussion of “Durango and Abu Dhabi: A Cross-cultural Exchange” at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The film by Kim Martin presents several women from Durango asking questions of women in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, about their loves, values and opinions. The intent of the film is to spark dialogue and address misconceptions about the Middle East.
This event is sponsored by the Great Decisions Forum Policy Discussion Program, which is hosted by the League of Women Voters.

Gallery hosting preview of exhibition
Durango photographer Howard Rachlin is displaying several photographs of his forthcoming “Visions of the West” show this month as a preview at the Sub-Stra-Tum Fine Art Gallery, 1021½ Main Ave.
Rachlin’s full show will appear in February. The opening-night reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 1 with live music provided by local musician Lee Bartley.

Singles to mingle at Discovery Museum
Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio, will host a Speed Dating and Singles’ Mixer at 7 p.m. today.
The event is coordinated by DurangoDates.com, a free and confidential service.
Papa Otis will take the stage for live music at 9 p.m. following the singles’ mixer.
The cost is $20 in advance at DurangoDates.com, $20 at the door ($5 for music only after 9 p.m.). Ladies who sign up with a friend will receive two-for-one admission.
The event is recommended for ages 28 to 38 and 39 to 52, but all are welcome.

Children invited to try musical instruments
Music in the Mountains Goes to School will present an Instrument Discovery Day on Jan. 18 in Jones Hall at Fort Lewis College.
Two sessions will be held: 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. All ages are welcome.
There will be free mini lessons and professional expertise on band and orchestra instruments, voice, guitar and piano.
