ICON art show kicks off Sacred Arts Festival

The 2013 Sacred Arts Festival will begin at 5 p.m. today with the opening reception for the art show, ICON. The exhibit will hang through Nov. 4.

Opening weekend events will continue Saturday with Poetry for the Spirit at 7 p.m. and Sunday with Music for Sacred Spaces at 2 p.m.

All festival events will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.

The festival highlights artistic expressions of the sacred, representing any faith tradition.

Festival events will continue in late October with Death Cafe, a drum circle, Day of the Dead crafts workshop and a workshop titled “Zen and the Magic of Photography.”

Public invited to Snowdown meeting

Snowdown Durango will hold the 2014 Snowdown Safari So Good Kick-Off Party from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Alpine Bank, 1099 Main Ave. The public is invited to see the unveiling of the 2014 Snowdown Safari So Good poster art and meet the artist, Josh Potter.

“Jungle juice” and food will be provided as well as an opportunity to sign up to be a part the various volunteer teams that make Snowdown happen.

Snowdown Safari So Good will take place Jan. 29 through Feb. 2.

Durango Arts Center to open Western exhibit

The Durango Arts Center will open the group exhibit “The West Revisited” with an artists’ reception at 5 p.m. Thursday in Barbara Conrad Gallery.

The exhibit, which is in conjunction with the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering, will remain on display through Oct. 19. It will feature works by Elizabeth Kinahan, Eric Candee and Theodore Waddell.

Bean to host closing for May’s exhibit

The Steaming Bean, 915 Main Ave., will host a closing reception from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday for Maureen May’s exhibit “Inch by Inch, Step by Step.”

The exhibit is of new work created by the artist, including 18-foot long monoprints.
