As summer winds down, concert hall offers some great shows

I can’t believe we’re almost into August already! Where has the time gone? I hope you’ve had a fantastic summer and have been able to take advantage of the many activities and concerts at the park, the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College and at Music in the Mountains.

FLC is getting ready to welcome back our students and begin preparing for a grand year of art, theater and music productions. We already have many items on the schedule with which to tempt you. Until then, the concert hall is poised to usher out this summer and bring in the new school year with a couple of great performances.

First up is Dweezil Zappa at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10. Perhaps the only person suited to truly carry on the tradition of Frank Zappa’s unique music is his son, Dweezil, and the son now continues the legacy of the father with “Fifty Years of Frank.” An accomplished musician who picked up his first guitar at age 6, Dweezil Zappa keeps his father’s music alive while making it his own. Always pressing the limits, Zappa draws his listeners into his intimate and multifarious musical world.

The dance floor will be open Aug. 16 for Daphne Willis. Collaborating across multiple genres ranging from roots-rock to pop to hip-hop and electronic dance music, Willis is hard to classify. With infectious melodies delivered with lyrical precision and honesty, her performances and songs are called sincere, compelling and relevant. In merely a few years, Willis has grown from a feisty neophyte into a self-assured, marvelously expressive artist with a bracingly seductive sound.
