Ash Wednesday services planned

The Rev Kevin Novack conducts Ash Wednesday Mass at the chapel at Mercy Regional Medical Center in 2016. Several area churches will be marking the day, which kicks off Lent, a time of penance and fasting leading up to Easter, with a special service.

Several churches will celebrate Ash Wednesday as the kickoff to Lent, the period of fasting and penance leading up to Easter, including:

Christ the King Lutheran Church: 495 Florida Road. 6 p.m. Wednesday.

First Presbyterian church of Durango: 1159 East Third Ave. Noon Wednesday.

First United Methodist Church of Durango: 2917 Aspen Drive. Noon and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

St. Columba Catholic Church: 1800 East Second Ave. Liturgy of the Word at noon; Mass at 5:30 p.m.

Mercy Regional Medical Center Chapel: 1010 Three Springs Blvd. Communion service at noon; chaplains available in Spiritual Care offices with imposition of ashes from 7:30 to 8 a.m. and 4:30 to 5 p.m.; “Ashes on Call” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. when chaplains will take ashes to any location in the hospital, which may be arranged by calling ext. 2340.

St. Ignatius Catholic Church: 15449 Colorado Highway 172 in Ignacio. Mass at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church: 910 East Third Ave. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner fundraiser by church youth from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., followed by the Burning of the Palms at 6:45 p.m.; 5:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday service.
