Assayii lake fire 98-percent contained

The Assayii Lake fire in New Mexico burned 14,712 acres and is 98-percent contained, according to the Incident Information System of the U.S. government.

The fire started June 13 in the mountains of the Navajo reservation north of Gallup. Smoke from the fire arrived in southwest Colorado a few days later, but only lingered here for a few days.

Management of the fire was turned over to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs on June 30 and most of the firefighters were released to go work on other fires.

Pockets of wooded areas within the burned area could continue to burn for the next three days. High temperatures, low humidity, thunderstorms and winds continue to be concerns throughout the West.
