Assistant District Attorney Christian Champagne has announced his intention to run for 6th Judicial District Attorney of Colorado.
Champagne has been the No. 2 prosecutor for the district since 2009 and has contributed opinion pieces to The Durango Herald on topics such as alternatives to prison sentences and ending sexual assault.
“I am proud to say that I have put habitual criminals and dangerous offenders behind bars for extended prison sentences, but I am equally proud to say that I have worked hard to help people in our community turn their lives around,” Champagne declares on his campaign site. “We need a prosecutor who can do both, and I have a proven track record that shows that I can help people get back on their feet and make the community a safer place to live.”
When reached this week, Champagne said he was at a conference and could not immediately comment about his candidacy.
The 6th district includes La Plata, Archuleta and San Juan counties.
No one else has declared candidacy thus far, so it is unclear if Champagne will face a challenger.
District Attorney Todd Risberg was first elected in 2008, and he will be ending his eight-year tenure. The office is term-limited.
