Durango police are looking for the culprit or culprits behind a spree of broken car windows across town on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Cmdr. Rita Warfield said as of Sunday morning she knew of 23 car windows that were broken during the crime spree, but she expected more reports to come in as broken windows are discovered and as the department tallies online reports.
No items were reported stolen from the cars, Warfield said.
“It’s a senseless act of vandalism. There’s no rhyme or reason for it, just the gratification or breaking someone else’s car window, she said. “We certainly would like to catch whomever is doing this.”
A heavy concentration of broken car windows came from south Durango, the neighborhood south of College Drive, where seven car windows were broken.
In addition, Warfield noted four car windows were reported broken on Riverview Drive, three on Alamo Drive, three in Crestview, two on West Third Avenue and one on Quasar Drive.
Because nothing was taken from the cars, police suspect the culprits were in a vehicle and using a BB gun, a pellet gun, a slingshot or throwing something at the windows.
The Durango Police Department is asking people to check their security cameras to see if the devices might have recorded something that could help identify a suspect. DPD is asking anyone with information that might help identify a suspect to call the DPD’s nonemergency number 385-2900 and ask for an officer.
People who wish to make an anonymous report can contact Crimestoppers at 247-1112, Warfield said.
Anyone who discovers their vehicle was damaged can make a report online at durangogov.org by clicking on the Police Department and then clicking on “Report Incident.”
“We’re at the felony level. It’s pretty expensive to replace a car window,” she said.
