DENVER – At least one person was shot Thursday near the state Capitol, the area that has been the hub of protests over the death of George Floyd for the last week.
Police said somebody shot a person carrying a weapon, believed to be an ax, before 10 p.m., The Denver Post reported. Officer R. Saunder told Post reporters at the scene that the shooting did not appear to be connected with the protests.
At first, police tweeted that one person was taken to the hospital for treatment after the shooting. Later they said two people who were possibly connected to the shooting went to the hospital on their own. One had been shot and the other stabbed.
Shayla Renz said she was coming into Civic Center Park when she heard gunshots. She said she saw someone bleeding and saw people panic and run.
At the time of the shooting, most of the protesters were marching blocks from the Capitol. Police told them about it when they returned the Capitol.
The shooting came one week after someone fired six or seven shots near the Capitol as people gathered for the first night of demonstrations on May 28. No arrests have been announced in that shooting.
