A Durango man who robbed an ATM user, and, while out on bail, committed identity theft, was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison.
Maurice Anderson, 32, pleaded guilty Nov. 15 to felony robbery and identity theft. He walked into court Thursday a free man, knowing he would be handcuffed and taken to prison to begin serving a three-year prison term – in accordance with a plea agreement he signed with the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
He received one day credit for time already served; Colorado inmates typically serve 50-70 percent of their prison terms before becoming eligible for early release.
He made no comments to the court Thursday, but upon entering his guilty plea, Anderson maintained his innocence of the robbery.
The robbery occurred about 5 p.m. April 21, 2015, at Bank of the San Juans’ downtown location, 144 E. Eighth St.
Police said Anderson approached an ATM user from behind while armed with a knife, which he used to stab the man in the chin before taking the money and fleeing in a white Toyota Prius. He wore a hooded, black coat or sweatshirt, gloves, sunglasses and a scarf covering his face.
The victim was not seriously injured. He is seeking about $6,200 in restitution for medical bills.
While free on bail, Anderson used a fake identification to fraudulently purchase a car for $30,000 and then sold it to a Farmington man for $16,385.
