Atmos Energy Corp. warns of email scam

Fake bills contain harmful links

Atmos Energy Corp., which provides natural-gas heat to customers in Durango, warned Monday of a scam bill being sent by email to customers and noncustomers throughout the United States.

The fraudulent email directs readers to a spam link, Atmos said.

“The fraudulent billing message references a fake account number and contains links to spam,” Karen Wilkes, Atmos’ vice president of regulatory and public affairs, said in a news release.

“The email provides links to view your bill, but if the recipient clicks on the link it takes them to a compromised website that harbors malware. We are asking anyone who receives this email to delete it immediately, and do not click on any links.”

Customers can view their statements online at atmosenergy.com. Customers with questions can call Atmos at (888) 286-6700.

Some Colorado customers have called with questions about the scam, spokesman Brian Martens said.

“We’re just trying to make sure customers don’t get scammed with it,” he said.

Atmos, based in Dallas, serves more than 11,000 customers in Durango. It serves 3 million customers in eight states.
