La Plata County has embarked on a new land use code. Every property owner needs to pay attention as it could have an appreciable effect as to what one could do with private property as well as its value.
The county is pursuing zoning of a sort that can have large impacts as to types of uses, density and other restrictions. If you have not attended a public meeting on this issue yet, I suggest you contact the planning department at 382-6263 to ascertain where and when the next meeting will be held.
It is important that you learn the issues, the process and how your property might be classified as to designated future land uses. A missed meeting could mean a missed opportunity to advocate appropriately for the uses of your property in the future.
Zoning should not decrease values but name and optimize options of use and guarantee them as a right. If you think a zoning designation can be easily changed in the future, you may be unpleasantly surprised.
