Aubry Brown throwing at Bayfield High School history

BHS thrower Brown aiming for Holdmair’s marks

BAYFIELD – Chip Hodlmair has taught Aubry Brown everything the Bayfield High School senior knows about throwing.

Maybe he taught the kid too much.

Brown set the BHS school record in the discus throw at the Pine River Invitational on Saturday in Bayfield, launching the disc 154 feet, 4 inches to win the event in the nine-team meet.

He also got within a couple feet of the school record in the shot put, tossing it 46-09.75 for another win.

“Just one day in practice, Wednesday last week, things just snapped. I started throwing great in disc and fabulous in shot,” said Brown, son of Russell Brown and Leslie Jackson. “Every single year I will have an okay first meet, and for the rest of the season up until our first home meet it’s all work, work, work until I set a new (personal record) then it’s all up from there.”

Brown moved to No. 3 in the state with his record discus toss and sits seventh in the shot put. He’d like to make the top three at state, but Brown’s ultimate goal is to pass Holdmair’s record of 164 feet. That would put him tops in state, so Holdmair, the BHS throwing coach, might want to watch his record.

Brown’s gold medal double-dip helped BHS win the boys meet with 196 points. Pagosa Springs was second with 87.

The Pirates got their revenge on the girls side, though, beating BHS 167-127.

The weather didn’t make it easy for any of the teams competing. Clouds kept the temperatures low, and later races dealt with rain and brief snow flurries.

“It’s a little harder to get the body loosened up,” BHS co-head coach Gary Heide said. “I thought, overall being cold conditions, they ran very good times.”

Brian Mashak burned up the track for BHS, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.78 seconds and the 200 in 23.68. He also was a member of Bayfield’s winning 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.

Alex Knight showed his stamina in winning the 800-meter run in 2:14.26, just edging Centauri’s Marcus Torrez, who was second in 2:14.29, for the win. He took the 1,600 by a more comfortable margin, winning in 5:04.37, 11 seconds ahead of second place.

Carl Heide mastered the hurdles, winning the 110-meter race in 17.64 seconds and the 300-meter in 44.71 seconds.

Ethan Tate took first in the 400-meter dash in 54.87 seconds.

Conner Kennedy cleared 6 feet to win the high jump, and Micahel Voss pole vaulted over 12-06 for the victory.

Maddie Foutz took first in the girls 200 in 28.66 seconds, and Jessica Cusick won the girls 800 in 2:30.29.

Bayfield’s 4x100-meter relay squad of Morgan Allred, Amber Johnson, Amy Roach and Jessie Roukema won in 53.26 seconds.

Katie Hawkins beat Allred in a jump off to win the pole vault at 7-06.

Ignacio High School

The Bobcats largely took a rest day Saturday.

Some of their athletes were taking the ACT, and Ignacio’s prom was Saturday night, so they weren’t trotting out a full squad for their third meet in the last eight days.

“We’re kind of booked solid for these couple weeks, so for running events we’re really taking it easy, not doing a lot with a lot of our kids,” IHS head coach Tony Kimball said. “With prom and ACT going on, our squad was really just decimated, so we were just focusing on field events and letting kids go.”

Chrystianne Valdez took third in the pole vault at 7 feet.

Lilliana Romero was 11th in the shot put and 12th in the discus throw but won the exhibition javelin throw event with a toss of 70-03.

Kyle Bailey was second for IHS in the boys high jump at 5-10.

Tyler Riepel took second for the Bobcats in the pole vault at 9-06, with teammate Blaine Mickey behind him in third at 9 feet.

The Bobcats will double the number of meets they’ve hosted in Ignacio in the last decade with Tuesday’s San Juan Basin League Championships, which start at 1 p.m.

“Gearing up toward the end of our season and gearing up for state,” Kimball said. “We’re such a small squad, we’re not really planning on vying for a league championship or anything like that, but kind of resting and spacing our performances out.”
