Avalanche work planned for Red Mountain Pass

An avalanche control crew member reaches up to indicate the 10 to 12 foot snowslide that was triggered during mitigation operations on Tuesday on U.S. Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass. Purposely triggered slides provide safer travel for the public, as opposed to natural slides, which have the potential of coming down at unpredictable times with the possibility of burying any passing vehicles.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will conduct avalanche mitigation work on U.S. Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass on Wednesday.

Motorists traveling over Red Mountain Pass, between Silverton and Ouray, may experience intermittent delays starting at 7:30 a.m. The traffic stops will occur for much of the morning until about noon. Delays may last as long as an hour. Motorists should plan their travel for these scheduled stops.

Travelers on Red Mountain Pass should watch for snow equipment, maintenance crews and avalanche control crews working on the pass.

Road and weather conditions are available by dialing 511, (303) 639-1111 or visiting www.cotrip.org. Also available on the site are live cameras, travel alerts and a snowplow tracker.
