Axis Health opens new facility in Pagosa Springs

Ribbon-cutting and open house planned for Thursday

Axis Health System has opened a new health care facility in Pagosa Springs, which seeks to expand behavioral and primary care options in the community.

A ribbon-cutting and open house will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Archuleta Integrated Healthcare on Thursday, located off U.S. Highway 160 at 52 Village Drive, behind City Market.

According to Matt Payne, senior director of integration for Axis, the new 10,275-square-foot facility will be equipped to meet the increasing needs of the growing community in Archuleta County.

Axis Health’s team at Pagosa Springs Behavioral Healthcare was displaced after the Adobe Building fire in October 2016, and relocated to a temporary site, a news release said.

In June, behavioral health care workers started to move into the new Axis Health facility, Payne said. Primary care providers have also started to move in, and the facility will be fully operational this fall.

“AIH allows us to continue providing behavioral health care, which we have done for over 40 years in Archuleta County, while also expanding to offer primary care medical services as part of our whole person, integrated care,” AHS Chief Operating Officer Shelly Burke said in a prepared statement. “We will ramp up our primary care availability over the next several months, and we’ll do our best to get new patients into the clinic as quickly as possible.”

Payne said the older facility at Pagosa Springs Behavioral Healthcare served several hundred patients. With this new, bigger facility, he expects that number will increase significantly.

“Having more options in the community for people to access health care is never a bad thing,” he said. “We feel like our integrated model treats the whole person and increases communication between providers, which results in better outcomes for patients. We think it’ll be great for the Pagosa community.”

Axis Health provides an integrated approach to health care that includes primary, behavioral and oral care at nine locations in Southwest Colorado, the release said.
