The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen, in collaboration with members of a U.S. Forest Service trail crew, recently worked on improving a popular section of trail near where the Big Lick Trail meets the Hermosa Creek Trail behind Durango Mountain Resort.
This section had become virtually nonexistent where it traversed a steep shale hillside. The worst part of the trail was improved, but there is still a lot to be done, according to a news release from the Back Country Horsemen.
The work was done July 12 in an area just above where the Big Lick Trail comes down to the Hermosa Creek Trail.
The group, known as 4CBCH, was represented at the trailwork by several members: trail boss Todd Rodas, his wife and sidekick Judi Hurley, vice president Cathy Roberts and her son Ian Junkermann, trails chairman Jon Sherer and past president Bob Volger. Forest Service trail crew members Tim Foulks, Jason Buda and Kate Fink lent their muscle and their experience in building and maintaining trails.
The 4CBCH works to keep trails open to all users by cutting out downed trees, cleaning up trash and improving trail tread.
Areas that 4CBCH has adopted are: Lower Hermosa Campground, Lower Elbert Creek trail and Upper Elbert Creek trail, Upper Dutch Creek trail, Pine/Piedra Stock Drive, and the Colorado Trail from Little Molas Campground to Rolling Pass. Educational programs are presented each month at the group’s membership meetings.
