Bad-check writer arrested

Durango police caught up with a man who has been writing checks on a closed account at Wells Fargo Bank. He passed four checks for a total of almost $2,300 before being caught.

The object of the search was John D. Cochran.

Cpl. Evan Dunlap with the Durango Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Cochran on Dec. 19. Cochran was located by Dunlap and arrested by La Plata County Sheriff’s deputies Dec. 22.

On Dec. 11, Cochran wrote two checks totaling $369.22 at Put A Cork In It; on Dec. 15, he passed a check for $902.04 at Pine Needle Mountaineering, then returned that evening to write a check for $885, which was refused; also Dec. 15, Cochran obtained goods at Rose Pedals with a check for $1,018.

Dunlap said Cochran has a history of writing bad checks that dates to the 1990s.
