The bad news: a three-game losing streak.
The good news: Durango High School baseball head coach Rob Coddington thinks that after an 8-5 road loss to Montrose on Saturday, the Demons are ready to break it.
Weve got to polish a couple of things up, Coddington said. The kids are really working hard and showing a lot of effort. We get the pitching dialed in, and I think were going to be in good shape.
The Demons were tied with the Indians 5-5 going into the sixth inning, then Montrose scored its final three runs.
Blake Dunlap, in his first start this year, took the loss after 5 1/3 innings. Behind him, though, Coddington said the Demons defense really found its perfect pitch after needing a good tune-up for much of the season.
Our defense (Saturday) was awesome. We got guys laying out all over the place and just our mental approach to the game, Coddington said.
Part of that approach has been solid hitting, and that continued Saturday.
Connor Dugan went 3-for-4 with two triples and three runs, and Tyler Worley hit a two-run home run.
Im happy with how theyre going up and swinging the stick, Coddington said.
Durango (6-7, 1-4 Southwestern League) will host rival Montezuma-Cortez at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Durango High School.
