A bad second quarter hurt the Durango girls basketball team on Saturday against Fruita Monument.

The Demons led the Wildcats 15-11 after the first quarter, but went into halftime trailing 25-17 after struggling in the second quarter.

Fruita continued pulling away after the break and eventually won the contest, 49-33.

Senior Sydney Flores scored 13 points and had six rebounds to lead Durango. Freshman Katelyn Sheppard knocked down two 3-pointers to add eight points. Junior Mason Rowland, who is one of the top scorers in the state, was held to seven points.

The loss was Durango’s second straight, and was only the second time all year DHS has lost two straight. The Demons are now 11-5 overall and 1-2 in the 4A/5A Southwestern League. Fruita improved to 13-2, 2-0.

Next, DHS will continue its league play on Saturday when the team visits Montrose (9-6, 1-1) for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff.
