Ballet, Bar D, Silent Bob to head up the hill

We’re ringing in the holiday season with art exhibits, a holiday concert, the ‘Nutcracker’ ballet, Bar D Wranglers and more.

Senior level art-graphic design majors have designed, curated and installed their creations in the Art Gallery. The works on display show advanced projects in graphic design and digital media. The show opened Wednesday and continues through Dec. 18.

The music department’s holiday concert, Friday, will get you in the holiday spirit with the perfect mix of classical, traditional and contemporary choral and band music for the season.

As has become tradition at the Community Concert Hall, the magical holiday ballet, “Nutcracker,” performed by the highly-acclaimed State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara, will usher in the holidays with two matinee and two evening performances. Artistic Director Rodney Gustafson holds true to the original classical ballet in this Tchaikovsky masterpiece, creating a traditional “Nutcracker” set in Victorian times and suited for all ages. For the first time at the Community Concert Hall, the ballet will feature a live orchestra, as the San Juan Symphony is set to perform, Dec 11 through Dec. 18.

Durango’s much-beloved cowboy crooners come off the Bar D and return to the Community Concert Hall stage for their traditional cowboy Christmas show on Dec. 17. Founded by Cy Scarborough in 1969, the Bar D Wranglers offer their own unique style of Western music, cowboy poetry and humor. The Christmas Jubilee is a warm-hearted and fun-filled show that inspires the entire family to remember the true meaning of the holidays.

Decemeber 18 brings writer, comedian, podcaster and film director Kevin Smith. Smith has written and directed numerous films, including “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Red State” and “Tusk.” He created AMC’s “Comic Book Men,” authored “Silent Bob Speaks, Shootin’ the Sh*t with Kevin Smith,” and most recently, “Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good.”

An Evening with Kevin Smith is a chance to get up close and personal with the man himself. (Some material may not be appropriate for children)
