Ballots in the mail: Voters to decide taxes, schools and library district

Election Day is Nov. 5

Mail-in ballots for the November off-year election that will determine if the state can exceed revenue caps set by the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights and if sports books will be allowed in Colorado casinos should be in voters’ mailboxes next week.

La Plata County Clerk and Recorder Tiffany Parker said she mailed out the ballots Friday morning.

“Voters should get them next week; we don’t say a certain date because now they go to Albuquerque, but definitely by sometime next week, they should get their ballots,” she said.

If a voter doesn’t receive a ballot by Oct. 21, he or she should go to the La Plata County Clerk’s Office for a replacement ballot.

On the ballot will be two state propositions sent to voters by the Colorado General Assembly.

Proposition CC would allow the state to keep revenues collected beyond limits set in TABOR in perpetuity. Proposition DD would legalize sports books in state-licensed casinos, and in doing so, would allow Sky Ute Casino and Ute Mountain Casino to pursue opening sports books.

School board elections in Bayfield, Ignacio and Durango school districts are on the ballot as are tax increase requests from the Pine River Library District, the La Plata Library District and the Animas Mosquito Control District.

The official election date is Tuesday, Nov. 5, but Parker recommends mail-in ballots be returned no later than Oct. 28.

After Oct. 28, ballots can be returned 24 hours a day at four drop-off sites.
