Ballots trickling in at a snail’s pace

La Plata Electric Association members are taking their time in returning ballots in this month’s election to fill four seats on the board of directors.

As of Friday afternoon, Tiffany Lee Parker, the La Plata County clerk and recorder, had received 1,579 ballots – just short of 5 percent of the 31,829 ballots mailed April 24.

This week, 1,099 supplemental ballots were mailed Wednesday to 1,099 members in two districts who either had received no ballot in their envelope or had received a ballot with incorrect names.

Ballots must be received – either by mail or hand-carried – at Parker’s office, 98 Everett St., Suite C, by 4 p.m. May 15. Ballots can also be taken to the annual LPEA meeting May 16 in Pagosa Springs; they must be delivered before the 10 a.m. business meeting begins.

Candidates are Bob Formwalt and Nicholas Kazarinoff in District 1 (Pagosa Springs); Gregg Dubit and Kohler McInnis in District 2 (south and west La Plata County); Britt Bassett and Jim Wotkyns in District 3 (city of Durango); and Heather Erb and Karen Barger in District 4 (north and east La Plata County).
