Why is the burning of fields allowed in these dry, windy conditions?
I have been keeping track of three fires set by our neighboring ranchers this morning. All three have required the intervention of firefighters to extinguish the blazes.
As I watch, the fire trucks have been speeding from one field to another for the past three hours, and the noxious smoke continues to pollute the whole valley.
Since obviously we cannot depend on common sense here, it would seem that an outright ban on field burning needs to be enforced until conditions improve.
And by the way, we are not “city folk.” we have been ranching for the past 40 years and have never yet had to set a field on fire.
