Banged-up DHS falls in opener

Durango dropped without four regulars on its varsity roster

A Durango High School girls basketball roster beset by injuries couldn’t get the better of Loveland in its season opener.

Loveland downed the Demons 48-24 on Thursday on the first day of the Hornet Holiday Tournament in Pueblo.

The Demons (0-1) were without senior forward Emily McCue, who’s out with an ankle injury, while two other unnamed varsity regulars missed the game with concussions and one was academically ineligible.

“They were just a little bit older and stronger than us,” DHS head coach Nancy Smith said. “We took five of our (junior varsity) players and the five healthy, eligible varsity players.”

Katie Wiegert had eight points and eight steals for Durango, while Stephanie Basye had eight points and five rebounds.

“The first half, they pushed the ball well. ... We got the ball out quick at several points during the game. I was really pleased about that,” Smith said.

“We had two full days of practice all together. ... I was pleased with what we were able to do.”

DHS will hit the court against Harrison at 5 p.m. Friday in Pueblo.
