Lauren Boebert was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a free and fair election that was certified by the state of Colorado.

While some may not like the results of this election, the fact that she won is not in dispute. She is our representative to Congress. My concerns with Boebert’s behavior are not based on partisanship but rather a responsibility to fulfill the solemn oath that I took as a Durango City Councilor to support the Constitution of the United States of America.

When Boebert was sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives, she pledged to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

The hallmark of our democracy is that our elections are free and fair, and that we honor a peaceful transfer of power. Over the course of two months, challenges to the presidential outcome were made and dismissed more than 60 times by the courts, including two Supreme Court challenges, and through three recounts. On Jan. 6, as the certified results of this national election were being presented to members of Congress, domestic terrorists engaged in an attempted insurrection against our democracy.

These terrorists savagely attacked police officers, including bludgeoning Officer Brian Sicknick with a fire extinguisher, causing his death. Boebert referred to these domestic terrorists as her constituents. These people – her so-called “constituents” – desecrated the Capitol building and threatened violence toward members of the media and Congress. With cries of “Hang Mike Pence” – our nation’s duly elected vice president – they erected a gallows with a noose. These acts of sedition are a scar on our democracy, a scar that can only heal by holding accountable those who participated, incited or supported this insurrection.

With her tweets and comments supporting conspiracy theories and sedition, Boebert expressed solidarity with these insurrectionists. With a violent mob ransacking the halls of the US. Capitol, she found time to tweet about Congressional members’ whereabouts, including one specific target of the mob, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

I am a constituent of Boebert. I am also an elected official who has sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.

Boebert’s actions did not support a peaceful transfer of power, but rather served to encourage and support this violent insurrection. I can neither excuse nor condone Boebert’s actions. Rather, I condemn her behavior as not protecting our Constitution from domestic terrorists nor befitting the office to which she was elected.

I fully support the letter from elected officials serving in Colorado District 3, which I signed, that condemns her behavior and asks Congress to fully investigate her actions and hold accountable the individuals and groups who were involved in this insurrection.
