The Bayfield High School baseball team continued its tear through the 3A Intermountain League with a road doubleheader sweep of Centauri on Saturday.
BHS claimed wins of 9-1 and 22-9 on Saturday in La Jara. That moved the Wolverines’ record to 10-7 overall and 6-0 in the IML. BHS is tied in the league standings with Alamosa, and the Wolverines will host the rival Mean Moose for a league doubleheader May 4 to likely determine the league winner. Alamosa beat a short-handed BHS team 14-4 at the Brush tournament in early April.
In the Wolverines’ 9-1 win Saturday, Jake Brandon went 2-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored. Hayden Farmer was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Rhett Hoover had a triple and Alec Demko added a double.
Farmer was the winning pitcher in five innings of work. He struck out 11 and gave up only three hits and one run. Jake Brandon closed the final two innings and struck out two.
In the 22-9 win, Bayfield went down 2-0 after one inning but put up five runs in the second to take the lead for good. Hoover hit a pair of homers, and Jake Brandon added his third homer of the day and had five RBIs as part of a 4-for-4 game at the plate. Hoover also had five RBIs and scored twice. Hub Brandon scored three times from the leadoff spot, while Isaac Ross was 1-for-2 with four runs scored and an RBI. Demko added two RBIs and scored three times, as he was 1-for-3 at the plate.
Andrew Morgan earned the win on the mound for BHS in four innings. He allowed eight hits and nine runs – six earned – while he walked one and struck out three. Jake Brandon closed and allowed one hit and a walk in tow innings. He struck out two.
BHS will host cross-county rival Durango at 3 p.m. Tuesday before the big showdown with the Mean Moose on Saturday.
Montrose High School pitcher Trey Schwardtfeger carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before a Dawson Marcum single for Durango broke it up. Schwardtfeger would allow only one more hit the rest of the way, a Jordan Stanley double, in pitching the Indians to a 10-0 win Saturday morning in Durango.
The fourth-ranked team in Class 4A baseball bounced back nicely from an 11-0 loss Friday to the Demons (7-10, 1-3 5A/4A Southwestern League) with a run-rule victory of its own. Leadoff hitter Emmert Kastendieck provided plenty of spark at the plate, as he was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Base running was key for the Indians (16-4, 4-2 SWL), who scored a pair of runs in pickle situations between first and second base that allowed runners to score from third.
Dillon Shaw was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Keagan Goodwin was 1-for-2 with three runs scored. At the bottom of the order, Indy Laird had a big game, as he went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Schwardtfeger struck out six and walked only one in the win. Fynn Hyson was the losing pitcher of record for Durango. In 3 1/3 innings, he allowed eight hits and walked two with one strikeout. Of the seven runs, he earned four. Elias Fiddler pitched an inning of relief before Montrose ended the game with one out in the fifth inning with its 10th run. He allowed two hits and walked one with one strikeout.
DHS will play a non-league game at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bayfield.
