The Bayfield High School baseball team continued its tear through the 3A Intermountain League with a road doubleheader sweep of Centauri on Saturday.
BHS claimed wins of 9-1 and 22-9 on Saturday in La Jara. That moved the Wolverines’ record to 10-7 overall and 6-0 in the IML. BHS is tied in the league standings with Alamosa, and the Wolverines will host the rival Mean Moose for a league doubleheader May 4 to likely determine the league winner. Alamosa beat a short-handed BHS team 14-4 at the Brush tournament in early April.
In the Wolverines’ 9-1 win Saturday, Jake Brandon went 2-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored. Hayden Farmer was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Rhett Hoover had a triple and Alec Demko added a double.
Farmer was the winning pitcher in five innings of work. He struck out 11 and gave up only three hits and one run. Jake Brandon closed the final two innings and struck out two.
In the 22-9 win, Bayfield went down 2-0 after one inning but put up five runs in the second to take the lead for good. Hoover hit a pair of homers, and Jake Brandon added his third homer of the day and had five RBIs as part of a 4-for-4 game at the plate. Hoover also had five RBIs and scored twice. Hub Brandon scored three times from the leadoff spot, while Isaac Ross was 1-for-2 with four runs scored and an RBI. Demko added two RBIs and scored three times, as he was 1-for-3 at the plate.
Andrew Morgan earned the win on the mound for BHS in four innings. He allowed eight hits and nine runs – six earned – while he walked one and struck out three. Jake Brandon closed and allowed one hit and a walk in tow innings. He struck out two.
BHS will host cross-county rival Durango at 3 p.m. Tuesday before the big showdown with the Mean Moose on Saturday.
