Bayfield 4-0, obliterates Olathe

#2 Wolverines at #9 Gunnison Oct. 9

Having shown teams their offensive capabilities during this fall's first three games, the Wolverines threw Olathe for a loop last Friday with a brutal defensive performance that fueled a 42-7 victory.

Senior defensive lineman Clyde Leonard, with a fourth-quarter fumble recovery-and resulting 24-yard touchdown-finished what classmate and fellow d-liner Noah Loutherback began with his own recovery early in the game in the 2A Western Slope (South Division) Conference clash. In between, BHS booked three additional touchdowns and gave the Pirates as little chance as possible against the classification's second-ranked crew.

Senior Wyatt Freier and sophomore Hunter Killough each had an interception. Sophomore Ryan Phelps also came out of a scrum with an OHS fumble not long after the visitors put the ball on the Wolverine Country Stadium grass, but fortunately retained possession.

Offensively, seniors Zane Phelps and Brody McGhehey were again a thunder/lightning duo in Bayfield's backfield, combining for nearly 225 yards at over 10 per pop and totaling four TD's. Freier hauled in a 34-yard score thrown by senior receiver Taed Heydinger, helping the Wolverines improve to 4-0 overall, 1-0 in conference.

Olathe dropped to 3-2, 0-1. In the Oct. 5 CHSAANow.com poll, BHS remained entrenched at #2 behind only 5-0 Englewood Kent Denver and ahead of 5-0 La Junta, with a key midseason test ahead Friday at Gunnison.

Rising one spot to #9 in this week's rankings, the Cowboys will check in standing 3-2, 1-0 after handling Montezuma-Cortez (1-4, 0-1) last week, 28-6, for their third straight win.
