Bayfield baseball opens new field with a bang

He didn’t have giant scissors, but Kelton McCoy still gave Bayfield High School’s new baseball field a grand opening.

The Wolverines’ catcher crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to spark BHS to a 7-3 win over Aztec on Saturday in Bayfield. He finished 3-for-4 on the day with three runs batted in.

Senior Matthew Knickerbocker was the only other Wolvierine with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

“We had a few scattered hits in the right places here and there,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said.

Few teams have played the Wolverines close this year, but Qualls was pleased with the way his team responded to the pressure.

“It’s good to see them win a closer game and stay in it with a closer game. We don’t always get a bunch of close games early in the season,” he said. “We had one (earlier in the year) that was close, and they didn’t handle it well.”

BHS (5-2) wasn’t rattled at home Saturday. The Wolverines didn’t commit an error behind winning pitcher Brody McGhehey.

“We played better defense than we have been playing,” Qualls said. “It’s good to play solid defense because we didn’t hit as well as we have been.”

McGhehey threw five innings, struck out four and only allowed two earned runs. Zane Phelps finished the game, striking out three in two innings of work.

“We were standing-room only for the opening day,” Qualls said. “The weather was beautiful. We had a lot of support here. I couldn’t ask for a better day to open up on the field.”

After one game at home, BHS next will play Kirtland Central in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. in Kirtland.
