Bayfield High School’s baseball team came up empty in four games in Phoenix during spring break.
In the final game of the Greenway Festival tournament, the Wolverines fell 20-5 to Meridian High School of Idaho. The loss came on the heels of a tough 8-7 loss late Wednesday night to Greenway High School of Phoenix.
BHS (3-4) committed five errors in Thursday’s finale against Meridian. The Warriors (5-2) had 12 hits to the Wolverines’ four.
Rhett Hoover went 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs batted in for BHS. Dillon Vroman also drove in one run and scored one. Alec Dermko was 1-for-1 with a run scored. Michael Gettman went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Hayden Farmer and Shane Moore each scored one run. BHS used five different pitchers in the game that lasted only five innings.
Dillon Mahana had four runs batted in for Meridian. Joe Yrazabal drove in three, while Heyden Stark-Kenison and Mark Stewart each drove in two. Stark-Kenison was 3-for-5 at the plate.
Wednesday night’s game was much better for the Wolverines, who received a pair of home runs, as Farmer and McGhehey each went deep.
BHS took a quick 2-0 lead on Greenway (3-8) in the top of the first but trailed 3-2 after one complete inning and 7-2 after two innings. One run in the third and a big four-run fifth inning tied the game at 7-7 going into the sixth inning, but the Demons tacked on one run in the bottom of the sixth and kept the Wolverines off the board in the seventh to take the 8-7 win.
Farmer was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. He added a double to his homer. McGhehey also drove in two runs and was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Hub Brandon went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Hoover was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Demko went 1-for-3 with a double. BHS stranded 11 runners on base in the game, as the Wolverines totaled 14 hits and six walks.
Gettman was the losing pitcher Wednesday. He pitched two innings and allowed only one hit and one run. He struck out one and walked one. Brandon started the game and went four innings. He allowed eight hits, seven runs and three walks while he struck out six.
BHS head coach Danny Petrie said the Wolverines made the trip to learn about themselves and get better. They will find out if the trip paid off when they return to Colorado to open Class 3A Intermountain League play with a doubleheader April 3 at Pagosa Springs.
